BTW, Ken. I think the chicken coop cleaning is a much worse job than horse barns. That is true Sara, while growing up I never knew anybody rich enough to have a horse, maybe a mule or two, so I never cleaned out a horse stall until I was grown. A guy I worked with had a champion stud horse he paid about 20k for. He offered me some of the manure if I cleaned his stall out. It didn't stink near as much as chicken poop and it sure grew some good 'maters. When I was growing up we didn't have chicken houses but we had an area of maybe 1/4 acre fenced in with chicken wire. This kept the foxes and other critters from getting to the chickens and we had "free range" chickens before it was cool. We did have some nesting boxes scattered in there and my job was to go in and feed the chickens and to gather whatever eggs there were. Like Hiram mentioned. barefooted was the best way to go. You just walked through it letting the stuff squish between your toes then went and hosed your feet off when you were done. I also had to empty the slop jars every morning. Bet not many people here had to do that.

Not until I went into nursing did I empty "slop jars".

I had an aunt and uncle that still used an outhouse in the 60's. When it was real cold, they had a large homemade potty chair, and my aunt had to empty it into the outhouse. It was a big celebration when they got plumbing and had the electricity rewired. They were the first people I knew that had the little round dials for the lights, that could dim or get brighter. They went from being the most "backwoods" to being the ones with the latest, newfangled invention!
