unfortunately, planned obsolesence seems to be the rule rather than an exeception. If you make a fridge that will run for 100 years, no one will need a second one, and, without repeat buyers, a company will go under. That said, I can't imagine what it will take to break the hold that the oil industry has on the market place. Larry, that is so true about planned obsolesense. We even discussed that at our company Dynatrol where we built industrial electronic control systems. They never broke down unlike our competitors drives. We were always fixing their drives and never ours....we finally figured it out that we forgot to build in obsolesense..LOL Tommy

Mom & Dad had a Servel gas refrigerator that lasted them more than forty years, and it was used when they bought it. The only thing they ever replaced was a door gasket that rotted with old age. Finally, its only moving part, the door hinges, wore out & broke. None were available, since the company had long been out of business. It was like losing a family member. Servels were the best deal for the money, except of course for that company.

Well, if the other countries in this carbon footprint scam...which is the biggest one since Madoff, have their way, we are going to have to start producing such consumer products again. The reason? They have TOLD us to cut our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. I guess we'll then have to get our oxygen from some other place as trees need the carbons to produce oxygen.
It's now reported that these "chicken littles" have dumped their raw data that they used to "prove" this climate change. They only have the product from the raw data interpretation. How convenient. No REAL scientist would dump his raw data. Just more proof that it's a scam folks. And guess who's making the money from it.
I think if Obama bows down to these crooks he will be thrown out of office. We can only hope it's before 2012.

You are so right a real scientist would have made sure his data was true and would certainly not thown out the raw data.

In all countries but the US most vehicles are diesel. For some reason the US hates diesel even though it is 30% more efficient. Off roaders here order engines from Austrailia and England to repower their four wheel drive vehicles. Diesel vehicles are also much more polution free, even if they smoke some. Diesel has higher nox and particulate levels but are lower on all else. I have a warn out diesel pickup, 7200 pounds, four wheel drive and it still gets 21 mpg. It is also very warn out. My 17,000 pound class eight tractor with 500 hp will get 11 to 12 with no trailer. The old VW pickup in diesel gets 50 mpg.
I had a 1991 Geo that got 47 to 50 on gas but for some reason neither a motorcycle or a small car today will do that. I used to get a kick out of it, my Suzuki Intruder got 41 but the same company made the Geo and it got better. They don't want economy, its just a game.

Hiram, I beg to differ about motorcycles. My 600cc Honda Shadow averages 55-60mpg, and I run the crap out of it.
