I've found out a little more about Lt Col West. When he was in Iraq and in charge of (I think) a battalion they got a tip that there was an ambush planned. A local policeman was supposedly involved so they brought him in for questioning. He denied that he knew anything about an ambush, and declared that he was a true friend of the Americans. Apparently the good colonel didn't believe him. So he took out his service revolver and shot it off next to the guy's head. The policeman immediately turned on his fellows and gave the Americans all he knew about the ambush, plus a lot more incriminating evidence about people. Not only was the ambush foiled, they had no more trouble of that sort as long as Lt Col. West was stationed there. Of course in this politically correct era that would never do. West was brought back to headquarter and threatened with all sorts of things and the upshot was that he put in his papers to retire so that his pension wouldn't be in jeopardy. Personally, I like his style. He understands that you don't win a war and save American lives by being a nice guy. I hope he wins his run for Congress. But the Democrats will find a way to portray him as a bad guy, I'm sure.
