Today, members of both sides of the isle, will meet and try to come up with ideas for immigration reform. I'm all for immigration reform.....as long as it's the RIGHT kind. Will it be? Who knows with our Congress. Most of the members shouldn't even be there. They are more concerned with their party and their careers than they are with the United States. People, in the wake of Sandy Hook, are all for background checks before a person can buy a weapon. I'd like background checks on people running for office. Talk about mental health checks....a huge majority of congress would fail that one. And don't even get me started on BO. He'd not only be classified as a nut case by an honest mental health expert; according to a retired FBI agent that I know, he couldn't even pass a basic security check. And this man not only has the pen to issue executive orders, he also has the code for nuclear attack. VERY DANGEROUS!

I am curious, what do you think is the 'Right Kind' of immigration reform? My thoughts are that the illegals should be rounded up and put in prisons like they have in Mexico. The Mexican government doesn't fool around. Neither should the USA. The USA needs tighter controls over the border... either that or execute people that have made their way here using means that are not legal. The same goes for drug traffickers... shoot the idiots ( not what Jerry would have said)

I tend to agree with you Steve. If they've come here illegally and are taking...which is another word for STEALING...money from our welfare system and healthcare system...they are guilty...and ILLEGAL. What part of this do they not understand?

I think everyone understands it, including all involved, but things will persist as long as they keep working and showing a profit.

I agree that people who break the law should pay the consequences. BUT, the punishment should fit the crime. There is a vast difference between a member of a drug cartel who illegally comes into the USA for criminal reasons, and someone who comes here because there was no hope in Mexico and the road to U.S. citizenship was just too long and too hopeless. Children who were brought here by parents and know no other country to call home are in a different league than adults who come here and over stay their visas. That is why each case MUST be judged individually. And yes, we must make the road to citizenship more rapid and fair while investigating each person who applies. I had a friend who had to go through hell to get a resident visa even though she came from Canada which has a long history of friendly relations with the U.S. Her husband, who was born in the U.S. had to go through all sorts of investigation even though it was before 9/11. Yet we allow thousands of Mexicans to stay here when we know they are illegal. My two daughters-in-law (from Japan and Chile) had to wait for their green cards and likewise go through a long vetting process. What is fair for the individual and what protects the U.S. is going to take a lot of discussion. And the final judgment can NOT be made because we just feel sorry for some people. And MOST of all it must start with closing the borders of the U.S. and controlling just who gets to set foot on our soil. After all, it is OUR soil. It doesn't belong to the whole world!

You know, I don't think that is necessarily true. Even the politicians act as if the "Latino" vote was one block of voters. Of course, it isn't. Spanish type voters come from different countries and different backgrounds. You'll find that well educated "Latinos" are quite conservative. They tend to vote conservatively. The poorer do tend to vote for Democrats that is true. But their children don't always follow their parents any more than other children do. The one thing we do need to do in this country is to reinstate civics classes and teach children that it is a good thing to be an American and to be proud of their country. For too long we have allowed the Liberals to have their say in education. And they have followed the Communist model of educating the young to be ashamed of their country. THAT HAS GOT TO STOP. And that is why the little, local, elections DO MATTER. Who is on the county school board is important. Those kinds of positions will either save or lose America.

The one thing we do need to do in this country is to reinstate civics classes and teach children that it is a good thing to be an American and to be proud of their country. So how do we prove it to them? We had Civics, and it still jumped the track.

I believe it started when we said that the college kids would grow out of taking drugs and grow up to be like their parents. Of course, they didn't. Perhaps if there had been no welfare system and it was work or starve they might have gotten some sense pounded into them. But as long as our compassionate government gave them and their love children money, why work and act responsible?
BTW, If we want to just allow all of these illegal....oh excuse me, undocumented workers, to stay here, give them legal residence BUT, no free anything. No free schools for their kids, no food stamps, no free medical care, no social security, AND they have to pay any back taxes that they owe. So that if an illegal is picked up it's either get a card that lets them stay here (provided they have no criminal background) but they must sign on the dotted line that they will be thrown out of the U.S. if they EVER apply for any sort of welfare. Oh, and pay your back taxes. I bet that would get them opting for out of the country.

Funny story. The other day, I went through a McDonald's drive thru. Drove over to a spot in the parking lot near some trees for shade and started gobbling down 2 cheeseburgers and fries. A small morsel of meat fell on my shirt. I seen pigeons outside my window meandering around waiting for food. I threw the small morsel out the window. Out of the trees must have been 25 birds that weren't pigeons. I don't know my birds.
Of course me telling this story is that I started thinking of government handouts making people lazy and what has been said in this thread.

j.b., that is an excellent anology. I know that some of my friends think that I'm just an uncaring old grouch because I don't like welfare. But that isn't true. I've said it before, I'm all for helping the helpless, it's the clueless that I don't give a care about. And why don't I? Because it's their own fault. They are too lazy to take care of themselves and expect the rest of us to do it for them. WRONG in my opinion. And as you pointed out, they flock to any new program that will give them "stuff" at others expense. If disapproving of that is being uncaring...well then I'm uncaring.
