It's only February, but we've had both warm and cold weather which has brought the Spring flowers into action. My first daffodil burst into bloom yesterday looking rather cold and not sure it should have unfurled it's yellow head. The periwinkle vines have blue flowers on them and the ivy is itching to start it's creeping. This year we'll have more sunshine in the woods as a HUGE hickory had to be felled due to disease. So once again hope springs in my heart that I may actually grow some tomatoes.
We have the addition of a wooden sidewalk from the top of the hill to the front door. It makes access much easier than the old foot path. After a bit of time, the treated wood will be stained a dark brown. Shrubs will flank the stairs, and all will blend in with the woodland. But the dogs and grandchildren don't worry about that. They expend their excess energy by running up and down the sidewalk, jumping on to the long trunk of the felled hickory, scampering along that, leaping off the end, and starting all over again. Oh what couldn't I accomplish with that energy!
While I need to buy some more plants, I have an excess of banana trees. Anyone wishing some has only to come over and dig up the rhizomes. I started with three little slips that weren't as high as my hand. I now have a plantation of the ornamental bananas. Every Fall I cut them down after the first frost which kills them. And every Spring they come up two for one, and grow taller than the house. They are like the bamboo that my daughter-in-law swears will take over the house on it's march to conquer the world. She's sure that when mankind has destroyed itself that kudzu, bananas, and ivy will be all that is left of the world.....oh, and the cockroaches that she hates so much.
So how does your garden grow? Are you an avid gardener, or do you look forward, with dread, to grass cutting? As for me, I can't wait until it's warm enough to put up the hammock.
