Check out the Pell City magazine, a local Chamber of Commerce offering, produced by the same folks as Discover St Clair. Chris has a nice article in it about Kiwanis. Nice quotes, Chris.

Thanks Jerry. I'd forgotten that a nice lady had called me asking about Kiwanis. Friends have told me they got my picture from somewhere too. I'll have to dig up a copy. Oh, BTW Jerry, the Kiwanis Club of Pell City and the Coast Guard Aux. are co-sponsoring the Cardboard Boat Regatta this year. It's going to be held Aug. 17th starting at 11:00A M. Would you be available to take pictures please? It's going to benefit the Kiwanis ELIMINATE project. That is a project to eliminate tetanus throughout the world. We here in the U.S. don't think too much about tetanus because most of us get our shots starting when we are just little ones. But it's a terrible problem in third world countries where thousands of newborns die every year from the disease. They are usually infected through their chord which isn't treated with much hygiene when it's cut. And it's such a simple thing to eliminate. For less than $2.00 the expectant mother can be immunized and she passes the immunization on to her child. No tetanus for either one. I have to brag on Kiwanis a little bit here. Our last project was to eliminate mental retardation as well as goiters throughout the world by getting all countries to add iodine to their salt. I'm happy to say we succeeded. And a BIG part of that effort was thanks to UAB's Dr. Connie Shin Pittman. Connie, who passed away a few years ago, was tireless. She traveled the world pushing for iodine. She was especially successful in her native China. But she also traveled to the middle East and Africa. And hardly anyone, outside of Kiwanis, knows of her efforts. Birmingham should be proud of her. She was a fine doctor as well as a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.

Sorry, Chris, can't make it. I cannot take the heat anymore, and the unmanaged crowds at those events make picture-taking a real ordeal.

That's too bad Jerry. But I understand about the heat.
