I saw a little sign on another site that said: How can politicians represent you when they are paid millions to represent someone else?
That's a good question. And I think I have a solution...or at least an idea for starting a solution. Everything in government is paid for by tax dollars. The government doesn't produce a product that can be sold for a profit. They, for the most part, aren't even "selling" a service that is of much use to the average citizen....or much wanted either.
How about we the citizens of our individual states take over the paying of salaries to our representatives in the U.S. Congress. We could arrange it so that we not only pay our members of the House and Senate, but we also control what kind of retirement pay and medical coverage they get. If they insist on taking money from the Federal Government, we FIRE THEM! Call them home and have another election.
Now I know we would have to fight for this with the federal government. But don't forget, we have the power of the purse. If each state withheld the tax money that is sent on to the federal government until they got what they wanted I think the individual states could "have it their way", to quote a fast food place.
And furthermore, what would be wrong with the individual state legislatures electing the senators that go to D.C. instead of popular vote. It used to be done that way. Why can't we go back to it?
I know, you're thinking that a lot of states would have to agree to do this or it wouldn't work. And you're right. BUT, our revolution and breaking away from King George started with men talking in taverns, The Civil War started with men talking. The U.S. isn't set in stone. It can, and likely, will be changed. Why not change it to OUR advantage instead of the power brokers and bankers?
