I see that the case against the truck driver involved in the accident with Greg Surles has now started.
Let me make one statement to what I was told by a close relative who is friends with one of the main witnesses to the accident. I won't tell you his name or the company that he works for...but I know both.
According to this witness, he was driving a dump truck behind the 18 wheeler from the Sod Farm that struck officer Surles. There was one car between this dump truck driver and the 18 wheeler as they were driving on 231 going south approching the traffic light. He said that not only was the traffic light green for the 18 wheeler but he and the car in front of him would have made it through the traffic light also if it had not been for the accident.
He said the driver of the 18 wheeler did everything he could to avoid hitting officer Surles. Also, there was a lady in a red car who was stopped at the red light across the intersection from where Greg Surles was coming. (if she had a red light then Greg would have had a red light too). This lady just happens to work at the same small company that the dump truck driver works at and they both discussed the accident with each other. He said that she saw Greg looking off down the steet in the area of the mini storage buildings when he got hit by the 18 wheeler.
Now comes the accident report: The dump truck driver said he was asked to fill out a report on the accident. He said that he told the officer that the light was green for the 18 wheeler but the officer questioned him repeatedly about that statement. He said the officer even told him "you know you'll have to testify in court to that....are you sure you want to do that?" He said that the officer seemed to be threatening him.
Now this is what I was told a day or two after the accident long before any debate or discussion started on this topic. Even though I wasn't there to video the accident, I have no reasons whatsoever to doubt this account of the accident. What has been portrayed by the local police department and the DA contridicts this account which is something I had figured would happen from the start. In the words of someone close..."you know they're going to slam the truck driver".
Also during the following investigation I happen to have discussed this accident with the investigator from the insurance company for the Sod Farm. The lady explained to me how she was not able to talk to any of the witnesses in this case. She was being shut out. I also noticed something odd about the intersection, since I'm there almost daily. There was a large set of tree limbs blocking the view of the traffic light from where Officer Surles entered the interesection. Nobody else seemed to have noticed it but after I brought it up, the city cut the limbs down.
As far as I'm concerned, I think the accident was just that, an accident. Tommy
