This brings to memory the saga of Pete Rose, who says he bet on baseball, and bet on his own team, but never made a decision based on his bet. I never could buy that--did he leave a pitcher in a little longer than he otherwise would have, to the detriment of the team two months down the road? Larry, I was a big fan of Charlie Hussle (Pete Rose) and always thought he got a raw deal. I didn't know there was any evidence that he bet on his own team but then again if he had, and it was to win, I wouldn't have seen a problem with that. How many times have we heard "if you think your team is going to win...then put your money where your mouth is" I can't imagine in my wildest dreams Pete Rose throwing a game to win a bet. And if somehow he thought his team didn't have a chance to win a certain game, and he bet against his own team, I feel like he would have still tried to win the game no matter what his bet was. He was the ultimate competitor and I used him as an example in all my years of coaching baseball. Tommy

Sara--it's a sad tale to be sure, the implosion of a career and family due to adverse behavior (see Woods, Tiger.) This brings to memory the saga of Pete Rose, who says he bet on baseball, and bet on his own team, but never made a decision based on his bet. I never could by that--did he leave a pitcher in a little longer than he otherwise would have, to the detriment of the team two months down the road? Once your faith is gone concerning the integrity of the person, sports or not, its almost impossible to get back. I do feel bad for the ref and his family. But I thought the man said "for better or worse." I'm sure it's humiliating for the ex-wife, but would she leave him if he went to a mental hospital? What if he had malaria? It says here that Pete Rose always bet on his own team to win. www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2004-01-05-rose-timeline_x.htmThat would mean he wasn't throwing games. And he'd have no control over the play on other teams. I always felt Pete Rose got a raw deal. He shouldn't have been betting. But it's apparently an addiction for some people. Thank goodness it doesn't interest me! Other potentially addictive things do interest me though. I must remember to be careful.
